Karim Bandali, Ph.D.

KB

Dr. Karim Bandali is currently faculty and the Director of Academic Strategic Advancement at The Michener Institute for Applied Health Sciences.

A physiologist by training, Dr. Bandali's past research work has examined the potentially damaging effects of administering excessively high oxygen levels (hyperoxia), rarely considered when children undergo corrective heart surgery. His research has shown that exposure to hyperoxia can lead to the development of key metabolic and functional cardiovascular complications in newborns in an experimental setting. These novel findings have significant implications in the clinical use of hyperoxia, which have impacted paediatric cardiac patient care.

Dr. Bandali has several peer-reviewed publications and has been recognized for his scientific contributions with various prestigious awards including: The 2005 Bigelow Book prize for scientific integrity, innovation and productivity, The 2004 John Hepburn Award for excellence in cardiovascular sciences and the 2002 Richard Rowe Prize for excellence in paediatric cardiology. Dr. Bandali also teaches several undergraduate level courses at The Michener Institute focusing on anatomy, physiology and cardiac perfusion, and guest lectures for the Department of Physiology, University of Toronto.

His current interests focus on curriculum development, the implementation of digital imaging solutions in medical laboratory science, the development of senate governance and the role of simulated learning in the allied health environment.

Dr. Bandali was involved with the following M-THAC project as an M-THAC researcher:
