Marcus J. Hollander, Ph.D.

Marcus J. Hollander is President of Hollander Analytical Services Ltd. He holds an Honours BA in sociology, an MA in sociology, an MSc in health services planning and administration, and a PhD in Human and Social Development with concentration in social and health policy, administration and finance. Marcus has over 30 years of experience in health services research, evaluation and administration. He has held the following senior research positions: Director of Research and Planning for the Alcohol and Drug Commission of BC, Visiting Research Fellow at Statistics Canada, and Director of the Health Network of the Canadian Policy Research Networks. As an administrator, he served in a number of senior administrative and policy positions in the BC Ministry of Health, including its Continuing Care Division where he was responsible for the operational management of the BC continuing care system. Marcus holds academic appointments in Gerontology at Simon Fraser University, and in Health Care and Epidemiology at the University of British Columbia.

Marcus has been the overall project leader for a number of major, national, large-scale, multi-site, and multi-jurisdictional, health services and policy research projects. He has also been active in knowledge transfer activities in these projects. A number of his reports have received national media coverage in the Globe and Mail and other newspapers. Marcus was the team leader for a $1.6 million project conducted for the Canadian Forces Health Service (CFHS) that involved the evaluations of the CFHS' Case Management Program and Primary Care Renewal Initiative. The study was conducted in 2002/2003. Marcus was also the Co-Director of the National Evaluation of the Cost-Effectiveness of Home Care, a $1.5 million program of research conducted by Hollander Analytical Services in partnership with the University of Victoria's Centre on Aging from late 1998 to early 2002. The 15 substudies conducted as part of the evaluation were designed to determine whether home care is a cost-effective alternative to long term care facilities and acute care hospitals. Marcus was also the team leader for a national study of systems of care delivery for persons with ongoing care requirements and was Co-Director of a recently completed study of continuing care services for First Nations and Inuit. He is currently the Co-Director of a national study of continuing care services for Veterans Affairs Canada.

Dr. Hollander has worked closely with many M-THAC researchers on projects relating to care in the community, including Raisa Deber, Paul Williams, Janet Lum and Karen Spalding.
