Theme: Community Care
Project: 1-2: Children with Long-term Care
Needs.
Project Lead:
Karen Spalding
Synopsis of Project: This Project will employ the same research team and general approach as Project 1-1, but apply the balance of care (BoC) approach for the first time to examine decisions for children with long-term care needs in home and community. Specific objectives are to: a) document current patterns of care decisions, and care costs and outcomes for children discharged from acute care hospitals with specialized long-term care needs in home and community; b) assess factors, in addition to the care needs of individuals, which shape the BoC in local areas (e.g., family variables, health human resources mix and supply; the presence or absence of established linkages between health, social care and education providers); c) simulate the impact of altering the BoC, and d) analyzing cross-jurisdictional variations in the ability to place greater emphasis on home and community care within an integrated continuum of health and social care.
