dr. karen spalding Karen Spalding

Karen Spalding RN, PhD received her B.A. in Economics from Carleton University (1985), her B.Sc. in Nursing from the University of Ottawa (1989), her M.Sc. in Nursing from the University of Toronto (1993) and her PhD from the Department of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto (2005). After working in a variety of nursing leadership positions for 15 years at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), Karen joined Ryerson University as Associate Professor in the School of Nursing in 2003. Currently, Karen is Director of the Master of Nursing Program at Ryerson. As a pediatric nurse with a PhD focusing on Health Policy, the main focus of Karen's research program is examining the role of government in health care, how it is shaped by the interests and actions of key political actors and professional organizations; and the consequences of health system changes for health care organizations, providers (nurses), consumers (parents and children) and governments themselves. Karen's doctoral research examined how the policy and health system changes across Ontario impacted on children with complex care needs, their families, and health care providers. Her thesis was nominated for the Canadian Association for Graduate Studies/University Microfilms International Distinguished Dissertation Award. Karen is currently co-investigator on several externally funded research studies that involve both quantitative and qualitative methods that study the delivery and organization of paediatric home care. Karen is also the Principal Investigator on a Sickkids Foundation funded Children and Youth Home Care Network strategic project that aims to develop the first national guidelines for the delivery of home care for children and youth.
